The Tri (more or less)

Well, the triathlon went well despite the fact that my chip time never started. I was bummed that my times weren't recorded and I couldn't measure my progress. BUT, I felt good. The triathlon (although it's nice to have measures) is really all about having something to train for and a goal to achieve. Having that single solitary goal no matter how big or small keeps us moving forward. This was a BIG goal but I've also had smaller goals helping me along the way like cutting out my lunch time desserts. Since January I've worked on that goal and my energy during the day has increased, thus helping me feel more like working out later. So despite your goal size, MAKE GOALS and find someone who will help you stay accountable.

P.S

I almost forgot to tell you how great my morning was! After waking up and doing some reading I decided to go out for a walk. If any of you are familiar with Mapleton then you know how quiet of a town it is. I love that. I walked around for about an hour in the warmth and sunshine just thinking about life and saying some prayers. There's something about walking and being outdoors that brings clarity and as walked. I soaked in all of the scenery, sunshine, fresh air, the occasional dogs barking, cows mooing, and heard some kids playing and as I walked I really began to appreciate what life will have to bring me in the coming years as I get closer to having a family and a home. Point being..........go outside and take a walk, it feels great!

My class this week

In my health coaching class this past week we learned to identify our "energy zappers". Things like unfinished tasks, laundry that needs to be done, work conflicts, lack of exercise etc. We were asked to make a list of 50 energy zappers in our lives and then to start eliminating them. I can't tell you how liberating it feels to know what's soaking up and taking away from my life. Now that I know what they are I can't wait to start freeing up my life! Give it a try. P.S. I'm on my way out of town for the triathlon. 80 degrees and sunshine watch out!

Have a successful, peaceful and joyous day and weekend!

6 days!

6 days! I'm extra excited about starting this triathlon season. I haven't trained this much for anything in a while so I feel really good. Also, congrats to my friend Jessica who just finished 2nd place in the Icebreaker Tri this last weekend. She doesn't know it but thanks to her for inspiring me to do more tri's this summer. I am going to be signing up for the Salem Spring June 4th and Yuba Lake in September. Hopefully I'll feel encouraged enough to do my first Olympic Triathlon sometime in August. Oh ya, I think Jimmy and I will be doing a half marathon sometime as well. Friends, it almost summertime.........get out and do something you've always wanted to do!

Healthy happy family!

Part of my new and wonderful extended family has come up with a pretty cool healthy living contest. I wanted to write something about it because it focuses on small changes and little things we can do to improve health. Like making sure to drink 64 ounces of water in a day. Something super simple but how many of us do that? I know I have been slacking lately. I'll keep you updated on my progress. But if you want to check in on the details of the challenge then go to...........Veech Healthy, Happy Life Challenge   www.veechfamily.blogspot.com.

More Spin

I went to a different teacher. This one was more "by the book" as far as cycling goes and it was tough!! I mean this one was mentally hard for me. I thought the class would go for 45 so I pushed myself hard the last 5 minutes. Little did I know it went for another 15!! OUCH!! But, I'm glad I pushed through it though because that's 1052 calories I don't have to worry about :)

Who says there is a need for health coaching? Well........

Recently a well known talk radio host has started advertising for the need of health coaches. Who else thinks they are important. Read on.

Dr. Oz tells the US Senate we need Health Coaches. In a CNN interview, Dr. Mehmet Oz reported that health coaches should be a part of every public clinic, medical office and hospital wellness center and should be reimbursed by insurance companies & corporate wellness programs

And other noteworthy stories about the need for health coaches.........

St. George Anyone??

How many people can I get to commit to doing their first TRIATHLON? Or who else wants to join in? Every April and November it's been a family tradition of ours to participate in the SHAC Tri. There is a beginner distance and a sprint distance and this the beginner is where I got my start. It's low key and and is an indoor swim. I loved it! The race is conference weekend, 1st weekend of April. How great would you feel after accomplishing this? I've attached the link if you are interested. $35 dollars is as cheap as you'll get for a triathlon and trust me the reward of finishing is worth much more than that!!  Post a comment here or on Facebook to let me know if you're interested.

SPIN CLASS

So as I stood outside of the spin room last Wednesday, confused because of all the people in MY spin room (seriously I've never seen anyone else in there) a nice group of ladies asked me if I was coming in and I said yes.  I began my first spin class and the teacher said we are going to warm up. THIS WAS NO WARM UP. Imagine the peak of any workout you've done recently....that was our warm up. My thighs were burned out after the warm-up and I still had 30 minutes to go! Needless to say I made it through the class, but I barely made it down the stairs into my house. A special thank you to the ladies who peer pressured me into this! I went again last night and my thighs were less shocked but still dead but instead of being dead after the first 15 minutes, they lasted about 30. I can't wait to go every week! It's the best workout I've done since soccer 4 years ago! If you are even tempted to go.....GO!!!

Encouragement!

So I've been taking my classes in health coaching and I just have to say how much fun this is. We get to practice with our "practice partners" and both of mine are great! We coach each other to find goals to set that require the following: Set a goal that you know you can't fail and report back to your coach.  My first goal (baby step) is eliminating chocolate/dessert from lunch. Who needs dessert after lunch?! I don't and so I'm taking a baby step of eating better. It's funny how that little step bleeds over into other areas and provides encouragement. I love it. Last night we made another goal for me. This one is in exercise. I will be waking up early at least once a week to do a workout at home AND I will go to the gym at least one other time a week. So simple right? But I know I will succeed and that will encourage me to do more later. This health coaching is profound! Simple, but profound.
